Microsoft's Greatest Mistake was Losing on Android : Bill Gates

By Nancy Agarwal on June 27, 2019

In accordance to a recent interview, Microsoft's co-founder, chairman, CEO, chief software architect Bill Gates accepts his biggest mistake of putting Microsoft as the world's largest "non-Apple" mobile OS in android's position. At Village Global, a venture capital firm, Gates says that it was his fault to think that it is a natural thing for Microsoft to win Android as it is non-apple platform.  He also states that Google got the chance to shine into the mobile market due to distraction by some lawsuits.

Bill gates told that “The software world is based on winner-take-all markets strategy, particularly in case of standard platforms. He stated that the greatest mistake made by him ever is whatever mismanagement he engaged, caused Microsoft not to be what today Android is. He also mentioned that it could be a natural thing for Microsoft to win. Moreover, in 2013, Bill gates also described his flaw of accepting control-alt-delete function rather than asking them for a single key. This function was designed by David Bradley, the man who designed all IBM computers. Although in 2017, the goof he admitted was the use of Android phone by him.

In his interview speech, he quoted that:

" If you’re there with half as many apps or 90 percent as many apps, you’re on your way to complete doom. There’s room for exactly one non-Apple operating system and what’s that worth? $400 billion that would be transferred from company G to company M.”

Android was amassed back by google in 2005 for $50 million. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google admitted that their fledgling focus was to defeat Microsoft early in Windows Mobile performances.  During the legal fight with Oracle, Schmidt's also added that they were very sure about the success of Microsoft's mobile strategy in 2012. Although, Microsoft's Windows phone was killed by Android phones eventually.
Anyhow, Gates’ revelation is surprising, as of till now the assumption was that Microsoft missed mobile market was due to the mistake of Steve Ballmer. It is heard that Ballmer laughed at the touch-friendly feature of iPhone forgetting that the era of the keyboard was getting ushered by touch feature. This later became the key part of Microsoft’s early mistakes in the mobile market. Finally, in December 2018, Microsoft decided to completely scrap Windows Mobile Phone.
Later, Gates added that maybe Microsoft is weathered with its mobile mistakes but the business of cloud is thriving amazingly. He also says
“If we had gotten that one right, we would be the leading company, but oh well.”
